Second District gets first filing

By The Mercury

The race for the Second District seat on the Riley County Commission got its first formal contestant Tuesday when a Riley man filed papers putting his name on the ballot.

Jeffrey Holmes filed as a Republican for the seat presently held by Alvan Johnson. Johnson, who is serving his second term, has not yet indicated whether he will seek re-election to a third term. No Democrat has filed for the race either.

The deadline for filing for the position is noon Friday.

There have been indications from other persons that they intended to join the race, but to date none have done so.

The second commission district is a largely rural one comprised of the townships north of the city. However, a few in-city precincts are included in it.
