Schoen attributes crime drop to economy, patrols

By Brady Bauman

Riley County Police Department Director Brad Schoen told county commissioners the crime rate continues to drop in the area.

“We continue to sit around in our staff meetings and pinch ourselves on a regular basis as a result of the crime rate continuing to drop,” he said. “It dropped significantly last year, as you know, and our first quarter numbers are lower as well. “

Schoen gave several possible reasons for the drop in crime.

“The economy has turned around a little bit, our efforts to keep an eye on repeat offenders and to focus on places where crime occur are making a difference,” Schoen said. “It’s a combination of things.”
