Ruth Ann Grothjan, 91, Wamego, died Wednesday at the Good Shepherd Hospice House of Manhattan.

Ruth was born on her family’s farm near Wamego on March 14, 1923, the daughter of Julius C. and Alberta K. (Vinnedge) Sauer. She attended Wamego schools and graduated from Wamego High School in 1941.

She was united in marriage to Milus Joseph Grothjan on May 20, 1946 in Wamego. He preceded her in death in August of 1976.

Ruth was a lifetime member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, and was very active in the Wamego Senior Citizens. She worked at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society for over 35 years as a medical aide and a CNA. She also enjoyed driving a school bus for the Wamego School District from 1957 until 1987.

Ruth enjoyed her flowers and gardening, and time traveling. She also was an avid reader, played bingo and pitch, and especially loved being with her family.

Survivors include two daughters: Kathy Reddy (Mike) of Wellsville, and Julie Hammett (Brad) of Wamego; one sister: Esther Weixelman of Wamego; seven grandchildren: Michael Reddy, Jessica Zeck, Beth Abraham, Brooke and Blake Hoerman, Brett and Brynn Hammett; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Janice Prockish.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego. Mrs. Grothjan will lie in-state at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday, with family greeting friends during a visitation from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., and a Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church or the Wamego Senior Center, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, Wamego 66547.
