Runners compete in Poyntz Mile race

Runners from around the Manhattan area and a few from around the state competed in the Poyntz Avenue Mile on Friday.

The race, which is a fundraiser for the Manhattan High cross country teams, starts near Capital Federal and ends near AJ’s Pizza.

Joe Moore had the best overall time, winning the Elite Men’s race with a time of 4:16.9. Bryce Richards took second at 4:19.2, and Michael Melgares and Chris Melgares finished just behind him in second and third, respectively.

Cara Melgares was the winner of the Elite Women’s race at a time of 5:15.9. Ella Rosenkranz finished second with a time of 6:04.7.

Matt Heesch won the Citizen’s Race with a time of 5:11.8. Will Bannister was second at 5:14.8, and Adam Delekta took third with a time of 5:15.1.

The Citizen’s Race featured runners of all ages. The oldest runner in the race was 85-year-old Marvin Hachmeister, who finished with a time of 9:37.9 The youngest finisher was 3-year-old Jane McFadden, who finished with a time of 13:04.1.
