The Rock Creek softball team opened the season on the road Friday night against a tough Mission Valley squad — losing the doubleheader, 5-4 and 6-5.
Mustangs’ pitcher Blair Campbell had a strong effort in Game 1, giving up only one earned run and striking out five.
Rock Creek struck early with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, scored by sophomore Winter Henry. The Mustangs eventually went up 4-0 as they headed into the bottom of the 6th.
But Mission Valley came back and scored four runs that inning behind three hits and three Rock Creek errors.
The second game of the doubleheader would have the same kind of eight-inning result.
Rock Creek scored first and Mission Valley answered in the next consecutive innings to tie the game 3-3.
Mission Valley then took the lead on an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning. Rock Creek answered with a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to take a one-run lead.
The Mustangs outhit Mission Valley 11-7 in the game, but committed six errors to Mission Valley’s one.
Rock Creek’s Brynn Hammett debuted in Game 2, striking out six and allowing only seven hits and two earned runs.
Offensively for the Mustangs, three players had a two-hit games — Hammett, Abbie Plummer, and Kayla Boltz.
Eight of the nine Rock Creek players had a hit in the game. Winter Henry had 2 RBIs in the second game.
Rock Creek plays Osage City at home on Tuesday and plays at Wamego on Thursday.
The Mustangs’ JV team opens with Wamego at Rock Creek on April 7.
