A Riley man died and a Kansas State University student is in critical condition after a head-on collision Monday afternoon in the 16300 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard near the Fancy Creek bridge.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that at about 4:40 p.m., 32-year-old Steven Farnsworth was traveling south in a 1994 Pontiac Firebird when it went into the northbound lane. The car then collided head-on with a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup driven by 19-year-old Megan Ewell of Randolph.

Farnsworth died following the collision. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt, according to a KHP accident report.

Ewell was transported to the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. She was wearing a seat belt.

Hospital officials Tuesday morning indicated Ewell was in critical condition.

According to the Kansas State directory, Ewell is a senior studying animal sciences and industry.

The accident occurred near US-77 milepost 196.5, or about 2 miles north of Randolph.
