Residents of Riley, too, remember Ehlers fondly

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

I read with interest the articles in the Manhattan Mercury last week regarding the passing of Walter Ehlers and his place in history as a great American and the only Manhattan resident to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The small town of Riley is proud of the fact that Walter Ehlers and his sister, Leona Ehlers Porter, were both graduates of the Class of 1940 from Riley Rural High School.

His sister lives in Manhattan as do classmates Madeline Debus Rowley, Dail Nelson and Lois Scott Borg.

I was honored to visit him several years ago at the Eisenhower Center in Abiline.
