Public should demand changes in veteran care

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor: Our December issue of the American Legion magazine contains an article in which Veterans Administration Secretary Bob McDonald basically blamesCongressfortheVA’s problems.
In 2015, the VA under McDonald granted $177 million in bonuses. Senior executives received on average $10,000 apiece, and rank-andfile personnel received $900 on average. Ask your congressman if they approved these payments!
The truth is, the VA is a huge insurance company-government operation much like the farmers crop insurance program with insurance company profits the bottom line.
Few people realize that the VA was originally called the Bureau of War Risk Insurance and was changed to sound more public-friendly.
If the public and Congress really appreciate veterans, they would demand change. Veterans’ care and their lives should not be based on profits.
