Post office rolls back mail collection times

The Manhattan Main Post Office has rolled back its pickup times as a part of a national move to save money.

Brian Sperry, regional spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said in an email that mail operations in Topeka recently were consolidated into the Kansas City, Mo., plant. He said because of this, collection times in areas including Manhattan have been adjusted to align with transportation and mail processing.

Effective Oct. 26, the outdoor collection boxes at the Manhattan Main Post Office at 500 Leavenworth St., will change from 5:25 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 4:20 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. on Saturdays. The pickup time at the collection box inside the post office will change from 5:50 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 4:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

As a reason for these changes, Sperry said the Postal Service lost nearly $16 billion last year and projects a loss of $6 billion this year partly because of a rapid decline in first-class mail.

Sperry said no other changes are expected at this time.
