Possible child abuse reported

A 3-month-old boy was taken into police custody after he was taken to the hospital for head injuries last week.

Lt. Josh Kyle said the boy was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center the morning of Nov. 14 and later transferred to Stormont Vail in Topeka.

Kyle said the staff in Stormont Vail notified the Topeka Police Department for signs of possible abuse. He said social workers also contacted the Riley County Police Department, where an investigation was initiated.

The incident reportedly occurred in a residence in the south-central part of Manhattan. Kyle said preliminary indications suggest a caretaker abused the child, who is reported to have possible internal injuries.

Kyle said a temporary custody hearing is scheduled in Topeka on Monday.

Riley County detectives are following investigative leads in the case.
