Police warning of sweepstakes fraud

By Katherine Wartell

Riley County police are warning the public of potential sweepstakes frauds that have resurfaced in the area.

Lt. Josh Kyle said that in a recent case, a fraudulent company called Consumer Sweepstakes, Inc., sent a check to an area woman informing her that she had won $55,000, but told her that she needed to wire them $3,800 of it to cover company fees.

Kyle said the woman wired the money but discovered Wednesday, after being notified by her bank, that the check sent to her by Consumer Sweepstakes, Inc., had been bad.

Kyle said in these cases, the victim is then responsible for the money they cashed from the bad check. He said the victim is duped in these incidents into sending their own money to the scammers.
