Owner of gun found by school is located

Officials said they have located the owner of the gun found in late April near Manhattan High School.

School resource officer Brian Swearingen emailed parents Wednesday to inform them that he is “confident” police have located the owner following an investigation, but he said the Riley County Police Department cannot release the person’s name due to ongoing investigations involving the owner.

The gun was found on April 30 in Sunset Cemetery adjacent to the school. Swearingen told parents police found the owner after scouring 56 days worth of video of the cemetery wall, conducting several interviews and “thanks in big part to a traditional ‘lucky break.’”

He said there was no threat associated with the gun and it does not belong to anyone associated with the school.
