Our early power source? It’s a classic mystery

Q: I’ve been reading the “Manhattan history” items every day in the Mercury, and I had a question about the very first one, for Jan. 1: I wonder where the power came from on Jan. 1, 1890 for the Manhattan Electric Light Company. Where was the plant and what was its fuel?
