Optimist Lady Indians place third

The Manhattan Optimist 12-and-under Lady Indians softball team placed third out of 18 teams at the Sacred Heart Booster Club tournament Saturday in Salina.

The squad beat the Clay Center B’s 7-2 in the opening game, then downed the Neon Crush 12-5 to win its pool.

In the tournament’s semifinals, the Optimist Lady Indians fell 6-2 to Quiksilver from Great Bend. Amber Hildebrand was the winning pitcher against Clay Center, while Chelsey Henry got the pitching win against the Neon Crush.

Members of the Optimist Lady Indians are Dominika Cornejo, Ayanna Gamble, Haleigh Harper, Michaela Hayes, Chelsey Henry, Amber Hildebrand, Josie Hilgers, Cara Melgares, Maddie Shaneyfelt, Kenzie Smith, and Abby Whitney. The team is coached by Kim Harper, Jon Harper, Dave Hildebrand, and Pat Melgares.

The Optimist Lady Indians will play next at the Emporia Energy Classic on June 4-5.
