The Manhattan Optimist 18-and-under Moxie finished second in the the Ozark Classic NIT this past weekend in Branson Mo.
The Moxie went 2-1 in pool play, and 2-1 in bracket play for the runner-up finish.
On Friday, the Moxie opened pool play with the Regal Ice — losing 4-6. Shelby Holz went 2 for 2 with a double, Mariah Kinderknecht went 2 for 3, Alexis McCormick doubled and Alexis Wilson tripled in the game. Shannon Caffrey took the loss.
For the second pool play game Friday, the Moxie faced the Blue Springs Sharks, winning 4-3. Kinderknecht went 2 for 2, Miranda Hemmert had a two-run single and Linsey Kramer and McCormick each singled. Abby Snow doubled late to drive in the winning run. Caffrey earned the win.
The Moxie defeated faced the Midwest Nationals 6-1 on Saturday behind the weekend’s best team hitting display with nine of 10 Moxie players earning a hit in the game. Wilson and snow both went 2 for 2, while Hemmert was 2 for 3 with a double. Brynn Hammett got the win, giving up one earned run and striking out seven.
The first bracket play game was Saturday night, as the Moxie defeated the Lady Jazz 3-2. Hemmert and Holz had RBIs. Caffrey got the win.
Sunday’s semifinals saw the Moxie defeat Kansas City’s MWCrunch 7-0 to advance to the championship game. Hammett, who picked up the win, was 2 for 3 with a double. Snow and Caffrey were both 2 for 3. Wilson tripled and Linsey Kramer doubled.
The Moxie lost to the Regal Ice 4-0 in the title game, managing only three hits — two from Hammett and one from Caffrey.
The Moxie, who are now 11-7 this season, will play in Topeka this weekend at the Shawnee County Slugfest.
