Last weekend was a struggle for the Manhattan Optimist 16-and-under Moxie softball team, as it traveled to Topeka for a tournament.
The Moxie lost to the Topeka Heat in the opening pool play game, 3-1. Despite leading 1-0 through the fifth inning, the Moxie gave up three runs in the top of the fifth inning and could not answer.
Mariah Kinderknecht went 2 for 2 and Abby Snow singled. Brynn Hammett pitched, allowing a pair of walks with three strikeouts.
In their worst outing to date of the summer, the Moxie got whipped by the KC Blast 11-1 in their next game. Behind two hits, the Moxie plated their lone run on an Abbie Plummer RBI. Snow went 1 for 2 in the game. Shannon Caffrey gave up only three earned runs and walked one.
In the first game of bracket play, the Moxie defeated the Lawrence Phenix-Flyers 6-5. Manhattan managed four hits in the game, as Hammett led the way with a two-run double. Linsey Kramer tripled. Plummer and Shelby Holz each had RBI singles. Hammett earned the win.
The final two games of bracket play were losses at the hands of the Kansas Classics, 8-0, and the Liberty Venom, 2-1.
In the Classics game, Plummer went 2 for 2 and Kinderknecht singled. Caffrey had an RBI single and Snow went 2 for 3 against the Venom, as the Moxie left 12 runners on base in the five-inning game.
Caffrey and Hammett took the losses against the Classics and the Venom. After going 1-4 on the weekend, the Moxie is now 12-11 for the summer.
The Moxie traveled to Kansas City this weekend to compete in the USSSA state games.
