Optimist Moxie plays in KC tournament

Manhattan Optimist Moxie 16-and-under softball team traveled to the Second Annual NAMI Benefit NIT at Mid America this past weekend in Kansas City — going 1-3-1- in a 21-team field. 

Moxie opened against the Brookfield Blues and finished the game in a 1-1 tie.  Kelsey Quinn was 2-for-3 and Tyler Hoyt pitched. 

The second game in pool play was against KC Journey, with Moxie losing 6-0.  Winter Henry was 2-for-2. Cierra Lesperence pitched the complete game. 

In bracket play on Saturday, Moxie won 4-3. Shannon Caffrey and Tyler Hoyt split the pitching duties. Abby Snow and Abbie Plummer were each an 3-for-3. 

To finish off Saturday’s play, the Mustangs ran into a salty Nemo Xtreme team and lost 6-0.  Cierra Lesperence pitched, striking out seven. 

The final game of the tournament for Moxie was against Fire & Ice from Olathe, with Moxie losing 2 -8. 

Moxie players include Tyler Hoyt, Kelsey Quinn, Winter Henry, Shannon Caffrey, Abbie Plummer, Mariah Kinderknecht, Alexis Wilson, Sarah Altenhofen, Cierra Lesperence, Bailee Henry, Abby Snow and Leslie LeSuer.  The Moxie is coached by Michele Holaday and Jeri Brummett.

The Moxie will be in action this weekend in Manhattan at the USSSA Bite Outta the Little Apple Tournament.
