By Jelani Yancey

The Manhattan Optimist Moxie 16-and-under softball team competed at Blue Valley Recreation Complex in Kansas City this past weekend where the team finished 1-2-1.

The recruiting tournament had 26 Class A 16—and-under teams competing in a unique game format setting.

Game one of pool play had a runner at third at the beginning of each inning. Game 2 of pool play began with a 1-1 count on all batters and runners at first and second.  Game 3 started with a 1-1 count and bases loaded.

To open the tournament, the Moxie earned the win 9-8 over the Quad City Firebirds. Moxie committed only one error in the game and had eight hits. Winter Henry and Abbie Plummer were 2-for-3. Cierra Lesperance executed a squeeze bunt at time expired to score Plummer on the go ahead run. Shannon Caffrey earned the win.

The Moxie dropped the second game of pool play 15-5 against the Missouri Rattlers. Tyler Hoyt and Lesperance had the only two hits of the game and Henry suffered the loss.

In the final game of pool play — with the inning beginning with bases loaded — the Moxie and KC Journey ended in an 18-18 tie. Hoyt pitched a solid game for Moxie, backed up by six hits and five free passes by the Journey pitcher.  Abby Snow belted a triple in the game and continues to be golden in the outfield for Moxie.

The Moxie was eliminated in bracket play on Sunday morning, falling 7-0 to the Topeka Terror.

The next tournament for the Moxie will begin Friday in Branson, Mo., for the Ozark NIT USSSA Tournament.
