Optimist Moxie competes at state

By The Mercury

This past weekend Moxie went 2-2 in the USSSA state tournament.

The Moxie notched an opening-round 5-4 win against the Wichita Lady Reds. Moxie had nine hits in the game — Alexis Wilson, Mariah Kinderknecht and Brynn Hammett each had two hits. Miranda Hemmert had a two-run single. Alexis Campuzano had an RBI single. Hammett pitched for the win, allowing four hits and striking out five.

The Moxie dropped the next game to the Lawrence Phenix 7-0. Offensivelly, the Moxie was stymied and had a lone double from Alexis Wilson. Hammett suffered the loss.

In bounce back fashion, the Moxie earned a solid win and had a great performance in an 8-4 win over the Kansas Classics team.

Combining for nine hits again, the Moxie played a solid game behind a great pitching performance by Shannon Caffrey.  Campuzano had two doubles to lead the surge along with four RBIs, Hammett went 2 for 3 with a double. Caffrey doubled, Linsey Kramer belted out two singles and Shelby Holz was also 2 for 3 with a double.  Caffrey allowed only six hits and only one earned run, striking out three for the game.

In the final game, the Moxie faced the Wichita Havoc, falling 5-3. It was an ugly game, as too many free passes and five errors cost the Moxie. That Moxie did have eight hits to the Havoc’s four.

Abby Snow and Wilson both went 2 for 2.  Kramer, Caffrey, Hammett and Kinderknecht each had hits.

The Moxie is now 14-13 on the season and will finish up in a tournament this weekend in Adair .
