The Manhattan Optimist Monarchs 12-and-under fastpitch softball team competed in the USSSA Class “C” State Tournament in Topeka this past weekend, compiling an 0-3 record.
Manhattan opened against the Titanium and built a 5-3 lead, but could not hold it, eventually losing 10-5.
Grayce Morrison drove in a pair of runs with a ground-rule double and Mckale Stockebrand, McKenzie Davis and Abby Faulkner also had RBIs, while Morgan Wesley, Kelsey Coonrod, Abigail Chainey, Clara Carter and Blythe Wickstrum all scored.
The Monarchs next took on the Lawrence Hummers but lost 12-3.
Carter and Lindsey Wilson had hits in the loss, while Taylor Ryker chipped in an RBI in the losing effort.
The Monarchs closed the tournament with a 15-1 loss to the Whiplash ’02.
Carter had a pair of singles and three stolen bases, while Morrison executed a perfect drag bunt for another hit. Ellie Hacker failed to reach base for the first time in seven games, ending her season-high streak. Morrison, Hacker, and Wilson handled the pitching duties for the Monarchs, with Wilson taking a pair of hard-luck complete-game losses despite, allowing only seven hits for the weekend.
The Monarchs’ record is now 2-19 on the season. The team will compete this weekend in the West “C” state tournament
