The Manhattan Optimist 18-and-under Lasers softball team went 2-5 record at the Summer Smash this past weekend in Lenexa to finish seventh in the 15-team field.
The Lasers opened pool play Friday night with a 4-0 win over the NEMO Extreme. Aubrey Jung struck out eight and allowed just two hits to record the victory. Jung, Kylie Smith, and Paige Divine had two hits apiece.
The Lasers next lost to the Missouri Torque, 6-1. Bre Foster, Allie Massanet, Bri Womack and Mariah Stringfield had hits in the loss. The Lasers next lost to the Wichita Lady Reds, 3-2, with Smith blasting an RBI triple.
The Lasers completed pool play with a 4-2 loss to the Missouri Diamond Devils. Smith was the offensive star again, with a single and her second triple of the day.
Manhattan opened bracket play with a 7-1 loss to the Olathe Rockets. Blair Campbell and Womack had the Lasers’ only hits in the loss.
The Lasers’ fortunes improved with a 7-0 win over the Manhattan Sting on Sunday morning. Campbell tossed a three-hitter and singled twice. Divine also had a pair of singles and Foster singled and tripled.
With a 10-6 loss to the Kansas Classics, the Lasers were eliminated. Foster had three hits, Divine belted two doubles, Womack added two singles and Massanet blasted a two-RBI double.
The Lasers, who are now 14-12 this season, will compete this weekend in the USSSA state championship in Kansas City.
