Optimist Lady Indians win Topeka Spring Shootout

The Manhattan Optimist Lady Indians 12-and-under softball team kicked off its 2012 season with a win at the Class B Topeka Spring Shootout at Lake Shawnee over the weekend.

The second-year team gave up just 11 runs in five tournament games. Amber Hildebrand picked up three pitching wins and Chelsey Henry got the other two.

The Optimist Lady Indians earned the top seed out of Saturday’s pool play, beating the Topeka Magic (3-2), DC Attack (6-1) and the Topeka Toxic (12-2).

On Sunday, the Lady Indians beat the Topeka Fury 8-5 in the tournament semifinals, and beat the Toxic 2-1 in the championship game.

Members of the team include Ayanna Gamble, Haleigh Harper, Amber Hildebrand, Josie Hilgers, Chelsey Henry, Cara Melgares, Maddi Shaneyfelt, Kenzie Smith, Hana Tamura and Abby Whitney. The Indians are coached by Pat Melgares, Kim Harper and Dave Hildebrand.

The Optimist Lady Indians are 5-0 for the season and will play next at the Twin Oaks Invitational at Anneberg Park this weekend.
