The Manhattan Optimist Lady Indians placed sixth in a strong field at the Columbia (Mo.) Challenge softball tournament this past weekend.

The 12-and-under squad finished with a 1-4 record — the four losses coming by a combined five runs.

In Saturday’s pool play, the Lady Indians lost close games to the Missouri Fury (7-6), St. Louis Shocks (2-0) and the Columbia Rockers (6-5).

On Sunday, the squad shook off the sluggish start to beat the Boonville Blast 5-0, before staging an exciting back-and-forth game against the Jefferson City Xtreme. Both teams rallied late and were tied 9-9 in extra innings when the Xtreme pushed across the only run for a 10-9 win.

Cara Melgares was 11-for-16 (.687) during the two days to lead the team at the plate.

The Lady Indians are now 13-7 for the season and will next play in the Bite Outta the Lil Apple tournament Saturday and Sunday at Anneberg Park.

Members of the team include Ayanna Gamble, Haleigh Harper, Amber Hildebrand, Josie Hilgers, Chelsey Henry, Melgares, Maddi Shaneyfelt, Kenzie Smith, Hana Tamura and Abby Whitney.
