The Manhattan Optimist 13-and-under Lady Indians finished 13th this past weekend at the three-day Summer Smash in Lenexa.
The squad posted a 3-0-1 record to win its pool in early-round games. The Lady Indians defeated Tanel 360 Missouri 10-1, the KC Panthers 12-0 and the Midwest SWAG 7-4. The Lady Indians also tied the Lawrence Hummers 8-8.
That moved the team into bracket play with one of five No. 1 seeds out of the pool rounds. But the Lady Indians dropped a pair of hard-fought games in bracket play, losing to the Lawrence Stingrays 8-7 the and the Missouri Intensity 6-5 to end the weekend.
The bracket rounds marked just the second and third losses of the season for the Manhattan Optimist Lady Indians — all three losses have been by one run.
Hana Tamura was 2-1 in the circle for the weekend and Chelsey Henry was 1-0. The weekend was also highlighted by Amber Hildebrand’s first-career home run — a two-run shot to center.
