Optimist Fury competes in Lincoln tourney

The Manhattan Optimist Fury 12-and-under softball team ventured to Lincoln, Neb., this past weekend to compete in the Pitch For The Cure cancer benefit tournament.

The Fury showed some rust from a three-week layoff, struggling to a 1-1-1 record in pool play on Saturday. Bracket play on Sunday brought warmer temperatures and a hot-hitting Fury team showed up.

The Fury started with a 4-1 victory over Waverly, with Anna Batt going the distance in the circle.

In the bracket semifinals, the Fury defeated the top-seeded Lincoln Lady Dominators 6-0, followed by a 5-0 win over the Holland Titans in the championship game.

Katie Suther fired her second shutout of the day in the championship game victory. The entire Fury lineup contributed to another tournament championship.

Team members include Sydney Hefty, Emma Faulkner, Hannah Divine, Suther, Orianna Clements, Batt, Lawsyn Rowden, Amanda Luthi, Emma Schoenbeck, Nicki Keller and Taylor Ruckert. The Fury coaches are Clem Suther, Jen Faulkner and Jeff Keller.
