By The Mercury

The Manhattan Optimist 12-and-under Fury softball team competed at the USSSA ā€œCā€ state championship tournament this past weekend in Topeka.

The Fury began the weekend with a close victory over Emporia Energy, followed by a loss to Abilene Attack.

On Sunday, the Fury had to fight back through the consoluation braket ā€” starting with wins over the Riley Rebels, Topeka Tropical Storm and the Paola Panthers before facing a rematch with Abilene Attack. The Fury defeated the Attack 6-0 this time.

In the elimination finals, the Fury defeated the Holton Blue Heat 5-0 to move into championship play. The undefeated Maple Hill Bandettes needed one win to eliminate the Fury and win the tournament, but Manhattan held the Bandettes off for a 7-6 victory. The Fury won the final meeting with the Bandettes 6-5.

Members of the Fury include Anna Batt, Taylor Ruckert, Orianna Clements, Amanda Luthi, Lawsyn Rowden, Emma Faulkner, Nicki Keller, Emma Schoenbeck, Katie Suther, Hannah Divine and Sydney Hefty. The Fury coaches are Clem Suther, Jen Faulkner and Jeff Keller.
