Optimist Double Play plays two tourneys

By The Mercury

The Manhattan Optimist 12-and-under Double Play softball team has played in two tournaments so far this season. The first tournament being in Council Grove and the second in Emporia.

The team came home with three losses from Council Grove but bounced back with intensity at Emporia.

At Emporia, the day started with a one run loss to the Kansas Blue Sox. Megan Strait took her place in the circle. Offensively, Delany Trujillo had a good game with two RBIs and a home run in the third.

Next up were the Sneaky Cleats. For the second game, Caitlin Donahue started on the mound. The third inning brought in five runs from Donahue, Jill Fehr, Trujillo, Claire Broxterman, and Danae Adams. However, Double Play came up one run short.

To finish up the tournament, both offensive and defensive efforts came together against the Revolution. The first two innings put 10 runs on the board for Double Play and the Revolution was held to four.

Double Play team includes Donahue, Fehr, Trujillo, Hannah Burenheide, Broxterman, Adams, Codey Deihl, Strait, Jasmine Boatwright, Kaitlin Nelson, Morgan Rogers, and McKenzie Kruse. The team will be back in action May 10 in Manhattan and May 17 in Salina.
