Optimist Double Play competes in Topeka

The Manhattan Optimist 10-and-under Double Play participated in the state tournament June 13-14 in Topeka.

After losing 6-4 in their opening game against the Eudora Flames, the team bounced back with a pair of wins on Saturday. In the first game, they defeated the Garden City Wrath, 11-10. Jessa Kulp had a strong and consistent pitching performance. Claire Broxterman did the catching.

In the second game of the day, the Double Play dispatched the Turner Sidekicks 6-2. Tori Carroll pitched a complete game. Delany Trujillo caught. 

The last game of the day saw the Double Play lose a heartbreaker to the Topeka Blue Waves 14-13 in extra inning.

The team’s tournament MVPs were Trujillo and Danae Adams. Delany paced the Double Play with nine hits on the weekend, while Danae led the team with eight RBIs.

Double Play team members include Adams, Broxterman, Ames Burton, Carroll, Allie Conrow, Jill Fehr, Paige Fowler, Elise Funk, McKenzie Kruse, Kulp and Trujillo.

The Double Play took last weekend off and will finish the summer season in a tournament this weekend.
