Optimist Bullets take fourth

By The Mercury

The Optimist 12-and-under Bullets went 7-2 and finished fourth this past weekend at the Summer Smash in Lenexa.

In pool play, the Bullets were a perfect 4-0.  The Bullets won the first game against Flame Throwers 10-0 and then defeated the SWAT 4-1.  The Bullets then defeated the VooDoo Dolls 10-4 and the KC Eagles 6-3, as Manhattan earned the top seed from one of the three pools.

The Bullets beat the Tipton Tigers 5-0 to open bracket play, before finishing Saturday’s play with an 8-5 won over the Velocity.

The Bullets opened Sunday’s play with a 3-2 loss to the SWAT/Bryan, who went on to win the tournament.

In the double-elimination format, the Bullets would need to win their next three games for a rematch for the championship.

The Bullets rallied against the Olathe Rockets to win 7-6 to keep their hopes alive.

Manhattan would start the next game well, leading the Lawrence Phenix by one run after the first inning.  But the Phenix pitcher would remain a puzzle to the offense the rest of the game, as the Bullets lost 3-1.

Bullets players include Mady Trujillo, Rachel Allen, Saige Van Sickle, Rachel Duer, Ashlynn Bledsoe, Hailey Franson, Giselle Thirakul, Lauren Campuzano, Alex Hoelscher, Breanna Schroeder and Gabrielle Nelms.

The Bullets are now 24-7 on the season.
