By The Mercury

The Optimist Bullets 14-and-under B team competed in the Summer Smash in Kansas City this past weekend.

In a field of 17 teams and with only one starting pitcher able to make the trip, the Bullets finished the three-day event tied for fifth.

The Bullets went 2-2 in pool play, starting on Friday with a 6-3 loss to the Wichita Wave. Saturday’s pool games included an 8-4 win over the Kansas Titans, a 5-4 loss to the eventual tournament champions the DC Attack-Black and a 10-1 win against the KC Premier 00.

The team would enter bracket by playing its fifth game in the event and its third consecutive game without a break. Against the X Factor 99’s, the Bullets fought hard, but would lose,  5-3.

On Sunday, the Bullets looked to fight their way back up the bracket. The Bullets would score a 7-3 win over the Lunachix and follow that up with a 9-8 win against the NCK Nitro.

The Bullets’ run ended in their eighth game of the event with a loss to the Wichita Wave.

Bullets’ Rachel Duer provided most of the pitching and was helped by teammates Meg Auten and Alexandra Maulsby.

Allie Jo Hiatt hit an inside-the- -park home run and Malary Tajchman added a three-run homer. Maulsby would have the top batting average for the team, with Mady Trujillo leading the team in runs scored and Raegan Wilcoxson and Tajchman tying for most RBIs.

The Optimist Bullets are Trujillo, Duer, Ashlynn Bledsoe, Tajchman, Hiatt, Alex Hoelscher, Savanna Cavanaugh, Gabrielle Nelms, Wilcoxson, Auten, and Maulsby.

The Bullets’ record is 25-13.
