Optimist Bullets begin season in Lawrence

By The Mercury

The Optimist Bullets 14-and-under fastpitch softball team played in the Phenix Spring Slugfest in Lawrence this past weekend.

The tournament was the first event played in the Bullets’ 2014 season.

The Bullets went 2-2 in pool play. The team lost to the Topeka Fire-Storm 6-4 and to the X Factor 99’s 7-5. Bullet victories were against the Abilene Attack 99’s with a score of 5-4 and over the Lecompton Cyclones, 16-6.

Heavy storm activity in the area forced the cancelation of the event.

Savanna Cavanaugh led the team over the weekend going 7 for 9 at the plate and knocking in six RBIs. Rachel Duer was right behind her going 7 for 10. Alex Hoelscher and Rachel would lead in runs scored. Mady Trujillo had three triples and Malary Tajchman hit a two-run home run. Allie Jo Hiatt knocked in the game-winning run against Abilene.

The Optimist Bullets include Trujillo, Duer, Ashlynn Bledsoe, Tajchman, Hiatt, Giselle Thirakul, Emily Burt, Hoelscher, Cavanaugh and Gabrielle Nelms.

The next tournament for the Bullets will be the Abilene Invitational on April 26.
