Optimist Aftershock take 5th

The Manhattan Optimist Aftershock softball team played in the Kansas City Summer Smash this weekend.

The Aftershock lost their first game 8-0 to Mid-Mo Evolution from Waynesville, Mo., the eventual winners of the tournament. Makayla Tegtmeier had the pitching duties and Ashley Faiola caught. Jayden Weers, Tia Wood and Tegtmeier singled for the only offense.

Next up was the Olathe Flash, who won 5-4 in a very close game. Grace Suther pitched and hit a double. Faiola was behind the plate and tripled. Kali Crome, Weers, and Emily Brummett all singled. Tegtmeier had a double and a single.

The third game of the day was a loss to the Trenton (Mo.) Nitro, 8-2. Lack of offense proved to be the nemesis for the Aftershock again with one single each from Faiola, Weers and Olivia Lee. Weers and Suther pitched and Tegtmeier had the catching duties.

Next up came another loss in the final inning of the game against the Diamond Devils from Chillicothe, Mo. The Aftershock fell 3-2.

Suther and Tegtmeier pitched and Faiola caught. Tegtmeier and Lee each had two singles. Faiola, Brummett, Crome, Wood and Alyssa Sias added singles.

Victory finally in the first game of bracket play. The Aftershock took the fifth game of the day, 5-3, over Team 4.13 from Overland Park. Tegtmeier pitched the win and Faiola had a strong game behind the plate. Lee singled and tripled, Faiola had a double. Maddie Rogers and Brummett singled. Completing the six-game steamy day, down one player with heat stroke, the Breeze (Ill.) Southern Strike defeated the Aftershock, 7-2. With Suther pitching, Faiola caught and hit two singles. Crome had a double and singles by Lee and Rogers completed the offense.

Sunday began with a victory over Gunpowder and Lead from Polo, Mo. It took extra innings, but a 4-3 score favored the Aftershock. Suther got the win and Faiola caught. Brummett and Weers each had two singles. Faiola, Rogers and Sias all singled in the win. The Aftershock closed their weekend against the Topeka Adrenaline, giving them a fifth place finish for the weekend. Suther and Weers pitched and Faiola caught her seventh game of the tourney. Brummett had two singles, Lee and Sias singled and doubles were offered up by Faiola and Weers.

Aftershock is 9-12 on the year facing some tough competition in every tournament. They will play June 28-29 at Lake Shawnee in Topeka.
