An Ogden man accused of killing his girlfriend’s baby was sentenced Monday in Riley County District Court for second-degree murder.

Michael Dechant, 20, was sentenced to 26 years and nine months in prison in a plea agreement.

Dechant reportedly told police that he shook 6-month-old Dominick Lubrano on March 15, which reportedly caused injuries that resulted in the infant’s death three days later.

Dechant was initially charged of murder in the first degree, but the charge was amended. The description Judge David Stutzman gave for murder in the second degree was that it was “unintentional and reckless.”

Dechant apologized in court to Dominick’s family.

Stutzman said the court undertook many considerations in Dechant’s sentencing, including his age.

Dechant was 19 when the child died.
