No. 2 Smith Center 63, No 1. Jeff Co. North 55

By Brady Bauman

The Smith Center Lady Red took charge in the fourth quarter and outscored Jefferson County North by five points to beat the Chargers 63-55 and win the 2A girls title at Bramlage Coliseum.

A seesaw battle most of the way, the Lady Red led the Chargers 28-24 at halftime and held just a 41-38 lead going into the final period.

But, it was there that Smith Center gained the edge, especially at the free-throw line where it was 19 of 27 for the game.

Smith Center senior Sydney Benoit scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. She was also 10 of 12 at the free-throw line and broke a 2A state tournament record for attempts at the charity stripe with 32 in three games. The previous record was 29.

It wasn’t all Benoit, though. Teammate Alexis Ryan was just behind with 23 points.

The Chargers were led by the tandem of Jacee Kramer and Jamie Navinskey. Kramer led Jefferson North with 18 points, while Navinskey scored 17.
