FLUSHING, N.Y. — Kansas State tennis player Petra Niedermayerova opened her weekend at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships with a loss on Thursday.
For the second straight season, Niedermayerova will compete in the consolation bracket, as she was unable to advance out of the main draw’s first round at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Facing California’s Anett Schutting, who is ranked No. 22 in the nation, Niedermayerova was defeated 6-4, 7-5, ending her six-match winning streak.
In the first set, Niedermayerova jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Schutting then secured five of the last six games to secure the opening set. Schutting continued to hold the upperhand throughout the second set to advance to the Round of 16.
Earlier this fall at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, Niedermayerova defeated Schutting 6-4, 6-3.
Niedermayerova, the top singles seed in the Central Region and the No. 14 player in the ITA national singles rankings, gained an automatic berth into the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships by winning the singles main draw at the ITA Central Regional in Tulsa, Okla., on Oct. 22.
Niedermayerova, a 2012 ITA All-American and a two-time All-Big 12 selection, owns a record of 11-2 this season.
The junior from Brno, Czech Republic, owns a career singles record of 59-25 (.702), including a 16-14 mark against opponents ranked in the national ITA singles rankings.
Niedermayerova’s career mark in straight-set matches stands at 51-14 (.785), which includes all 13 matches she has played this fall. Niedermayerova’s career winning percentage of .702 ranks second in school history.
