The season has ended for two Kansas State tennis players who faced a pair of Round of 16 matches Friday in the NCAA Division-I Singles and Doubles Championships at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Petra Niedermayerova lost in singles play, while the 26th-ranked doubles team of Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic was defeated in an afternoon match.
With three weather delays and seven hours of tennis under her belt following the first two days at the championships, 15th-rankd Niedermayerova had a short turnaround from her doubles match on Thursday night to her Round of 16 match on Friday morning to face No. 7 Gina Suarez-Malaguti of North Carolina.
Suarez-Malaguti controlled the match from the beginning, while Niedermayerova appeared fatigued in losing 6-1, 6-1. Niedermayerova owns a career record of 4-3 in her three NCAA Singles Championship appearances and ended her season in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Championships for the second straight season.
Niedermayerova ended her 2012-13 season with a school record mark of 32-10 (.762). She ended the season with wins in six of her final eight matches and had a 12-8 record against ITA ranked singles opponents. She earned her second straight ITA All-American honor, her second career ITA Central Region Player to Watch award and garnered her third straight unanimous All-Big 12 singles selection.
For her career, Niedermayerova secured the school record for singles wins with an 80-33 (.708) mark. Her career singles winning percentage of .708 ranks second in school history.
Niedermayerova had roughly four hours to recover for her doubles match with Bonacic against 25th-ranked Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton of UCLA. Niedermayerova and Bonacic put together a strong performance, but Anderson and Morton fended off the challenge to defeat the K-State duo, 7-5, 6-4.
The K-State tandem completed the season with a 22-11 record. The duo won the Big 12 doubles title from the No. 1 position in the lineup and earned All-Big 12 doubles honors for the second straight season together. The tandem won 11 of their last 14 matches.
Over the last three seasons when paired together, Bonacic and Niedermayerova were 35-27 and were ranked together in the ITA doubles rankings for 12 straight rankings dating back to April 17, 2012.
In combination with her results with both Bonacic and freshman Ivana Kubickova (5-1), Niedermayerova secured the school record for doubles victories in a season with her mark of 27-12 (.692). In her career, Niedermayerova owns a doubles mark of 60-41 (.594) to rank tied for eighth in school history for career doubles wins.
Bonacic has only played doubles this season with Niedermayerova, carding a record of 22-11, which ranks tied for seventh in school history for doubles wins in a season. In her career, Bonacic finished 61-59 (.508) in doubles action and ranks seventh in school history for career doubles victories.
The Wildcats will return a pair of letterwinners for the 2013-14 season, as Petra Niedermayerova and Amina St. Hill will look to lead a young quintet. K-State head coach Steve Bietau signed five student-athletes for the upcoming season, including Iva Bago, Liv Cirnu, Palma Juhasz, Tegan Louw and Maria Panaite. All five signees will be on campus as freshmen and will take part in the fall 2013 schedule.
