Newcomer leads in Wichita

WICHITA — Playing in his first-career event, K-State freshman golfer Matt Green sits atop the leaderboard after turning in a stellar opening-day performance during the 2012 Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic at the par-71 Wichita Country Club on Monday.

Competing as an individual, Green notched a 9-under 133 (68-65) to tie with Indian Hills golfer William White for the top spot after the first 36 holes of the tournament.

As a team, the Wildcats recorded an 11-under 557 and headed into Tuesday’s action in third place, trailing Indian Hills and host school Wichita State by two strokes and seven strokes, respectively.

Sophomore Kyle Weldon led the charge for the K-State scoring lineup as he sits in a tie for third after carding an 8-under 134. The Des Peres, Mo., native shot similar scores to Green, opening the event with a 3-under 68 and following that with a 5-under 66.

Junior Daniel Wood tallied a 2-under 140 to finish the first 36 holes in a four-way tie for ninth.

Curtis Yonke and Alex Carney sit in a tie for 22nd following an even-par score of 142, while Ben Juffer rounded out the Wildcat scoring lineup with 1-over-par 143 to tie for 25th.

Also competing as an individual, fellow freshman Hank Simpson opened up his Wildcat career with a good showing, recording a 4-under 138 (68-70) on his way to tie for ninth.
