Nelson shines in Packers’ Week 1 loss

By The Mercury

Former Riley County High standout and Kansas State All-American Jordy Nelson caught five passes for 64 yards in the Green Bay Packers’ 30-22 loss at home to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Nelson had a long catch of 28 yards and was on the receiving end of a pass for a two-point conversion.

Darren Sproles wasted no time finding the end zone for the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, scoring on a 2-yard pass from Drew Brees. The speedy running back caught five passes for 35 yards in the Saints’ 40-32 loss to Washington Redskins.

In that same game, receiver Brandon Banks caught one pass for 6 yards and averaged 24.5 yards on two kickoff returns and 8.5 yards on four punt returns. Banks also had a pair of fumbles, but recovered both.

Daniel Thomas was forced from the game early Sunday with a concussion. The second-year running back for the Miami Dolphins left the game with 28 seconds remaining in the second quarter when he got hit hard and fumbled the ball on a short gain. He did not return. Thomas finished with 11 yards on three carries, while catching one pass for 32 yards in the Dolphins’ 30-10 loss to the Houston Texans.

Quarterback Josh Freeman completed his first eight passes on Sunday in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 16-10 win over the Carolina Panthers. Freeman completed 16-of-24 for 128 yards and a 6-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams, while not turning the ball over. Freeman, who completed passes to six different receivers, also rushed seven times for 13 yards.

Reggie Walker had four tackles in the Arizona Cardinals’ 20-16 win over the Seattle Seahawks and rookie running back Bryce Brown had two carries for 3 yards in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 17-16 win over the Cleveland Browns. One more carry and Brown would have totaled his entire production with the Wildcats last season before quitting the team after Week 4.

Veteran cornerback Terrence Newman, who signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in the offseason, plays tonight at Baltimore.
