NBAF risk review set for Friday

The committee charged with reviewing the updated National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) risk assessment is meeting Friday in Washington, D.C.

The National Research Council committee meeting, which takes place from 8:30 to 11 a.m., will have a live audio webcast available at Tara O’Toole, undersecretary for science and technology at DHS, is scheduled to present to the committee.

The NRC committee is expected to provide its review of the Department of Homeland Security assessment in June. DHS released its assessment on March 2.

This is the NRC’s second review of a DHS assessment. The first occurred in 2010 when the committee concluded that there was a 70 percent risk of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak due to a release from the facility over the NBAF’s expected 50-year operating life. DHS’ recent assessment dropped the risk to 0.11 percent.
