Mother testifies against boyfriend

The mother of the deceased 14-month-old Salina toddler, Clayden Urbanek, testified in Riley County District Wednesday.

Brittney Betzold, 21, said in court that she didn’t want to believe her son was being abused by her boyfriend, Antonio Brown, 29.

Brown is charged in a jury trial in Manhattan because his case received intense media coverage in Saline County, forcing a change of venue.

According to a report from the Salina Journal, police testified that they found no evidence that Betzold directly abused her son, but that she didn’t act to protect him when she saw evidence, including multiple bruises and scrapes that indicated he was being harmed.

Betzold is serving a 13-year prison sentence for second-degree murder and child abuse.

Urbanek died Oct. 4, 2011 after he suffered severe abdominal injuries of which Brown is accused of inflicting.

Brown’s trial is expected to last into next week.
