Mother sought in boy’s disappearance

By The Mercury

A Manhattan man reported to police Sunday afternoon that his three-year-old son had been taken by the child’s mother in violation of a court order.

Police said there is information to indicate that the child’s welfare may be in question.

Arano Chavez, 39, 2140 Patricia Pl., said his son, Benjamin Antonio Chavez-Birdwell, is 3 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 50 pounds.

His mother is Sonja Karin Birdwell, 29. She is white, 5 feet 1 inch tall, 140 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes.

She is believed to be traveling in a stolen 2008 white Mazda 3 sedan bearing the Kansas plate number XIR464. The Mazda has damage to the front grill and driver side front bumper. It also has a “Briggs Auto” front tag.

Authorities said there is strong information to indicate that Birdwell is in the Topeka area. If located, they asked that a local law enforcement agency be contacted immediately.

Those with information related to the subject can contact the Riley County Police Department at 785-537-2112 or Crime Stoppers at 539-7777 or 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). They can also leave a web tip at manhattanrileycountycrimestoppers.com.
