Monarchs compete in Memorial Day tourney

By The Mercury

The Manhattan Optimist Monarchs 12-and-under softball team competed in the USSSA Memorial Day National Invitational Tournament this past weekend in Lee Summit, Mo.

The Monarchs — playing in the “C” class — opened pool play with an 11-1 loss to the Tipton (Mo.) Tigers. This was followed by a 10-0 loss to the Omaha (Neb.) Mystix Black.

The Monarchs next squared off against the eventual pool winners, the Topeka Wave. After falling behind 4-0, a two-out rally in the final inning fell just short and the Monarchs lost 4-3.  The Monarchs opened bracket play with an 11-3 loss to the Midwest (Neb.) Nationals White. The Smithville (Mo.) Sting then eliminated the Monarchs, 12-2.

Wilson, Morrison, and Chainey did all the pitching for the Monarchs for the weekend, while and Coonrod and Wesley split the catching duties. The Monarchs will play next this weekend in the Capital City Showdown in Topeka.

Team members include Clara Carter, Kelsey Coonrod, Lindsey Wilson, Grayce Morrison, Taylor Ryker, Morgan Wesley, Ellie Hacker, Abigail Chainey, Abby Faulkner, Mckale Stockebrand, McKenzie Davis and Blythe Wickstrum.
