MHS tennis falls in Lawrence dual

The Manhattan girls’ tennis team hit the road Thursday, traveling to Lawrence High for a dual.

The Indians were defeated 8-1 after winning last year’s dual by an identical score.

Manhattan coach Joyce Allen said this trip is usually reserved for seniors.

“It’s a tradition to take seniors on the Lawrence trip,” she said. “Everybody played really well. We had some close matches, and we’re ready to get back at it again.”

Kaitlin Wichmann, at No. 1 singles, was the lone winner on the day, winning 8-3.

At No. 1 doubles, the pair of Wichmann and Claire Freeby lost 8-5 to Lawrence High’s Lily Abromeit and Brooke Braman.

Other seniors that made the trip included Anne Roberson, Jenna Stigge, Cat Colburn and Brittany Jones.

The tennis team now must gear up for a busy upcoming week. They travel to Emporia Monday for a meet before heading to the Topeka West Invitational on Tuesday. They also host a quad meet with Emporia, Shawnee Heights and Junction City next Saturday.
