MHS swimming opens season at Emporia

The Manhattan High girls’ swimming team kicked off its season on Thursday at the Spartan Invitational in Emporia, finishing fifth out of eight teams.

The Indians scored 330 points, while Washburn Rural hit 401 for first, but MHS did qualify its 200- and 400-yard free relay teams for state and picked up a number of state consideration times.

The 200 free relay team of Mariah Scipio, Alana Bucholtz, Hannah Funk and Annemarie Bucholtz qualified for state with a time of 1:49.68. Madison Monaco, Katie Bussman, Emily Cady and Marlee Evans took 11th.

The 400 free relay of Alana Bucholtz, Funk, Makayla Walters and Scipio were third with a time of 3:56.37 to qualify. Keziah McNair, Emma Bartlett, Meagan Williams and Mary Langemeir took ninth.

The Indians opened the day with a fifth-place finish out of the 200 medley group of Annemarie Bucholtz, Williams, Walters and McNair. Monaco, Sammi Greiger, Bussman and Bartlett teamed to take 12th.

Funk took sixth in the 200 free, while Scipio was second in the 200 individual medley.

Scipio led a group of three points scorers for MHS in the 50 free, taking second with a time of 26.97, while Williams was 11th and Bartlett was 15th.

Walters finished fourth in the 100 fly, with Annemarie Bucholtz right behind her in fifth.

Alana Bucholtz win the 100 free with a time of 58.38, while Funk was sixth and Bartlett finished in 14th.

Walters was sixth in the 500 free with Evans in 13th and McNair in 15th. Alana Bucholtz was third in the 100 back, with Annemarie Bucholtz in fifth and Langemeir in 14th.

Bussman took ninth place for the Indians in the 100 breast, while Greiger was in 10th.
