MHS student accepted to Joffrey Ballet School

Sarah Mortenson, a Manhattan High junior, has been accepted to the Performance Intensive summer program at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, and has been awarded an arts grant from the Koch Cultural Trust to assist with tuition and housing expenses.

She was also invited to participate in the Joffrey Ballet School’s year-round Ballet Trainee program.

Sarah began studying dance at age four with Gyll Bates and has been a student at the Washington Dance Studio since second grade, studying with Sharron Washington, Jennie Stout and Kelly Law.

She takes ballet, pointe, lyrical, jazz, tap and is in the Senior Company.

She is also an assistant teacher for two elementary ballet classes.

Sarah received additional training in ballet and modern dance at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp’s Ballet Ensemble program in Michigan and with David Ollington at Kansas State University.

Sarah is also very involved in music as a violinist and violist, performing as concertmaster of the MHS Orchestra and as a member of the KMEA All-State Orchestra for the past two years. She is the daughter of Gary and Kristin Mortenson.
