MHS soccer advances to state

The Manhattan High boys’ soccer team advanced to the state tournament later this week with a 1-0 win over Dodge City in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

After 72 minutes of scoreless soccer, Jonathan Turnley kicked what would prove to be the winning goal on a penalty kick to stake the Indians to a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish over the final eight minutes.

Manhattan (15-3-1) advances to Friday’s state semifinals in Junction City where they’ll match up against undefeated and nationally-ranked Olathe East (19-0-0) in the first semifinal at 5 p.m.

In addition to the Indians, Blue Valley Northwest (15-3-1) and Derby (16-3-0) also advanced and will play each other at 7 p.m.

The third-place match begins at noon Saturday, with the state championship game to follow at 2 p.m.
