MHS girls squeak past Emporia

By Grant Guggisberg

EMPORIA — Just weeks after routing Emporia by 26 at home, the Manhattan High girls’ basketball team squeaked out a 50-41 overtime win against the Spartans in the return game.

Manhattan led 34-32 in the final seconds of regulation and could have expanded its lead, but instead Emporia got the ball back and Raegan Sanchez hit a long jumper at the buzzer with a foot on the line that forced overtime.

In overtime, the Indians were efficient, getting layups against the Spartans’ zone and running out to a 41-34 lead before Emporia made it interesting in the final minute, with Sanchez scoring all of its points in overtime and cutting the lead to three on several occasions.

Manhattan plays next in the Mid-America Classic in McPherson on Thursday.
