The Manhattan High boys’ cross country team continued its strong start to the season on Saturday with a first-place finish at Emporia.
The Indians won with a team score of 21 by putting four runners in the top five, led by Chris Melgares (1st, 16:09.7). Behind him were Michael Melgares (3rd, 16:28.4), Jack Keeley (4th, 16:31.3), Jackson Schroeder (5th, 16:31.8) and Isaiah Koppes (8th, 16:44.6). Josue Alvarado (12th, 17:02.2) and Nick Bandy (14th, 17:08.1) rounded out the scoring for the boys’ team. St. Thomas Aquinas was second in the team standings with 34.
On the girls’ side, Alaina Schroeder won the race in a time of 14:49.9 to lead the team, with Megan Ochoa (8th, 15:45.0) and Cara Melgares (9th, 15:49.5) right behind. Katherine Culbertson (18th, 16:29.1), Taylor Efurd (31st, 17:13.5), Rachel Beach (39th, 17:29.6) and Molly Bollman (41st, 17:33.4) rounded out the girls’ scoring. The girls’ team finished in third place with 67 points, behind St. Thomas Aquinas (35) and Maize (52).
The cross country teams travel to Joplin, Mo., next weekend for the Missouri Southern Stampede.
