The Manhattan Mercury won 17 awards in the 2013 Kansas Press Association contest, the results of which were announced this week.
The Mercury, which competes in the Daily Division II category, saw four first-place finishes: editorial writing, Walt Braun; headline writing, Megan Moser; news photo, Rod Mikinski; and best environmental story, Corene Brisendine.
Mercury staff members also won five second-place awards and eight third places.
In second place: series, Megan Moser; sports story, Grant Guggisberg; news photo, Sarah Midgorden; and infographic, Megan Moser.
In third place: local business story, Bryan Richardson; religion story, Bethany Knipp; education story, Bryan Richardson; column writing, Ned Seaton; sports feature story, Joshua Kinder; sports column writing, Joshua Kinder; photo package, Rod Mikinski; and special section, Mercury sports staff.
The winners will be honored at the KPA annual convention luncheon April 12 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan.
