McGruder to participate in 3-point championship

Kansas State senior Rodney McGruder will participate in the 25th annual State Farm College 3-Point Championship set for 6 p.m. Thursday at McCamish Pavilion on the Georgia Tech campus.

The event, which includes the Hampton Hotels Men’s 3-Point Championship, State Farm Women’s 3-Point Championship, Pepsi MAX Battle of the Champions and Denny’s Slam Dunk Championship, will be broadcast live on ESPN with Brad Nessler, Dan Dakich, Jimmy Dykes and Samantha Ponder.

McGruder will be joined in the men’s 3-point contest by Florida Gulf Coast’s Sherwood Brown, Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan, Belmont’s Ian Clark, VCU’s Troy Daniels, Indiana’s Jordan Hulls, Iowa State’s Tyrus McGee and N.C. State’s Scott Wood.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, McGruder was chosen as one of 20 seniors to participate in the Reese’s College All-Star Game, which is set for 4 p.m. Friday at the Georgia Dome.

McGruder will play on the East All-Stars coached by Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin. He is joined on the East squad by Wisconsin’s Jared Berggren, Davidson’s Jake Cohen, Ohio’s D.J. Cooper, BYU’s Brandon Davies, UCLA’s Larry Drew II, Creighton’s Gregory Echenique, Long Beach State’s James Ennis, Arizona State’s Carrick Felix and Akron’s Zeke Marshall.

An honorable mention AP All-American, McGruder led Big 12 co-champion K-State (27-8, 14-4 Big 12) in eight categories, including scoring (15.6 ppg.), double-digit scoring games (29), 20-point games (11), field goals (204), field goals attempted (462), rebounding (5.4 rpg.), free throws attempted (117), starts (35) and minutes (33.5).

He was just the third Wildcat to earn All-Big 12 First-Team honors since the inception of the league, joining Michael Beasley (2008) and Jacob Pullen (2010, 2011), while he was the only men’s basketball player to earn recognition to the All-Big 12 First Team in both athletics and academics.

For the season, McGruder averaged 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, two assists and 1.3 steals per game.
